This article is back from 2005.
Four years before cutting costs was obligatory, yet now companies are again investing in growth. Augmenting nonroutine activities have become at least as important as automating routine activities to reduce cost and improve efficiency. The evolution of workplace shows no signs of slowing. It will evolve as people evolves.
It is important to identify that innovation is the key to create competitive advantage in high performance workplace. What is also important KM must be addressed to requirements of different levels in organization, also KM must be in collaboration with suppliers, partners and customers.
Enterprise content management (ECM) which is an enterprisewide approach to manage content and the technologies to produce and use documents and content of the whole company. ECM must be designed in a way to allow workers to get content what they need wherever they are and regardless to what applications content was created in.
Companies must by aware of the fact that ECM is most valuable in automating processes. Today 80% of a company information is unstructured data that computers cant process. XML metatagging enables computers to process this content.
To keep up with changes we have to keep in mind that currently e-learning will cease to be a stand-alone system and will draw content from frontline applications. What is more companies will use it to create new businesses.
Concluding Gartner promised to keep the eyes on long term trends – for example companies still invest in portals as one of their favorite technologies.
