Microsoft Announces Windows Mobile 6.1

From this article we know that WM 6.1 is the next release of Microsoft's handheld operating system (OS) platform, and is targeted primarily at improving the platform's appeal to customers focused on increased security and manageability. Enterprises should change their Windows Mobile handhelds' specifications to include shipment with v.6.1 or a free upgrade to v.6.1.

The major focus of WM 6.1 is management, security and network performance. WM 6.1 includes new component SCMDM which enable Microsoft OEMs to battle more aggressively against BlackBerry devices.

Author of this article write also about new UI features. WM 6.1 includes a new home screen, supporting a sliding panel that provides more-immediate access to commonly used applications, as well as messaging improvements that include threaded conversations for all supported message types, including Short Message Service (SMS).
WM 6.1 is expected to include a new Internet Explorer Mobile browser, possibly with Ajax and Adobe Flash Lite and Adobe Reader LE support, which author expect will require device reflashing and possibly a hardware upgrade.

Release date is expected by the end of 2008.
