Taking Advantage to User Friendly Business Process Modeling (BPM).
Summary
Matching Modeling Techniques to different roles can really raise the generation of system requirements, benefit with more enthusiasm among users and use their knowledge.
The history shown that too complex Business Process Modeling (BPM) tools discourage users to use them.
Nowadays user friendly BPM are commonly used. They are easier for users to understand business processes and operate with it. it may bring some benefits for communication between business and IT specialists from understanding the way of representing and visualizing the business process.
The history of Process Modeling is long. It starts from 1920s and continuing to today. BPM has never become widely accepted, because of its complexity – not easy to understand and questionable value – no direct benefits. The following changes has been made to make it more understandable for business users. Is was simplified and the value of benefits raised.
User-Friendly Process Modeling is the simplified version that brings a lot of advantages.
Business process architects use methodologies and modeling tools but IT modelers use UML standards. Both approaches allow o represent a process models in more executable format. Business process modeling is becoming similar to modeling process known from IT.
Approach 1: - Process Modeling with Limited Business User Involvement
Formal process modeling with limited business user involvement. Business users are now given a tool to do modeling like Microsoft Visio which may become bridge between IT modelers and business process architects. Business Process Analysis (BPA) tools may be used by IT modelers and enterprise architects. It may become a standard of communication that business staff can learn.
Approach 2: - Capturing a Process Clearly
Capture and represent a process in a way that is clear to users and that leads itself to transformation for use in formal process design, implementation and optimization.
1) Business Genetics – methodology and graphical language(eXtended Business Modeling Language XBML) for user-friendly BMP. This user-friendly format can be translated into several others more technical languages.
2) GEMWorX FlowModeler from Global Enterprise Managers as an alternative approach. Start with a simple but well defined modeling approach displayed graphically. Such a result can then be fed directly into more comprehensive tool.
It brings visible effect that business users feel more friendly with:
- can modify and correct model
- like what they see and gain new perspective
- feel that models reflect the fidelity of their processes
- realize that they know more about particular process
- feel that the model belongs to them
- makes new proposals to make process better
These results could not be achieved using traditional process modeling.
